Enhanced Susceptibility of Methylmercury Bioaccumulation into Seston of the Laurentian Great Lakes

نویسندگان

چکیده

Mercury concentrations in the Laurentian Great Lakes waters are among lowest reported literature, while game fish approach consumption advisory limits, particularly Superior, Huron, and Michigan, indicating efficient methylmercury transfer from water to fish. To determine if increased efficiency is evident within lower food web, we measured (2010–2018) mercury dissolved organic carbon (DOC) water, size-sieved seston, dietary tracers (carbon nitrogen isotope ratios), phytoplankton bioaccumulation, biomagnification between increasing seston size fractions. We observed consistently low filter-passing (<0.010 ng L–1) comparatively variable DOC (1.1 3.4 mg concentrations. Methylmercury factors were similar lakes. Bioaccumulation highest literature (log 5.5 6.1), exceeding those oceans, smaller lakes, streams, was influenced by DOC. Higher bioaccumulation rates increase susceptibility of accumulation into web. Because dominantly delivered through atmosphere biota therein highly susceptible uptake, propose that excellent sentinels trace success efforts decrease global emissions (e.g., Minamata Treaty) future.

Meteotsunamis in the Laurentian Great Lakes

The generation mechanism of meteotsunamis, which are meteorologically induced water waves with spatial/temporal characteristics and behavior similar to seismic tsunamis, is poorly understood. We quantify meteotsunamis in terms of seasonality, causes, and occurrence frequency through the analysis of long-term water level records in the Laurentian Great Lakes. The majority of the observed meteots...

Paleolimnological comparison of the Laurentian Great Lakes based on diatoms

We used cluster analysis to compare records of diatom succession recorded in dated cores from offshore basins of the five Great Lakes. Most recently deposited samples from Lakes Erie and Ontario are far removed from the cluster centroid, as are samples deposited in Lakes Huron and Michigan during forest clearance. Most recently deposited samples from Lake Superior are also clearly segregated, b...

The influence of changing climate on the ecology and management of selected Laurentian Great Lakes fisheries.

The Laurentian Great Lakes Basin provides an ecological system to evaluate the potential effect of climate change on dynamics of fish populations and the management of their fisheries. This review describes the physical and biological mechanisms by which fish populations will be affected by changes in timing and duration of ice cover, precipitation events and temperature regimes associated with...

Histology of herniations through the body wall and cuticle of zooplankton from the Laurentian Great Lakes.

Zooplankton of the Laurentian Great Lakes developed hernial protrusions whose gross appearance matches those on zooplankton described elsewhere in the world. We have carried out a histologic and cytologic analysis of the protrusions and found that they are composed of apparently degenerating or necrotic tissue(s) that has been expressed from the organism through the process of herniation. At th...
